The Presbyterian Church was established in 1878. In 1912 the congregation moved to its present location at 8th and Green as a result of the gift of the Lutcher Memorial Building.
The Lutcher Memorial Building is the fulfillment of one woman'’s dream. Frances Ann Robinson Lutcher (Mrs. Henry Jacob Lutcher) planned and oversaw all elements of the building project without ever divulging the cost. The building’s purpose was to glorify God. Thus, everything in the building was the finest of its type-mahogany wood, granite exterior, opalescent stained glass windows and interior dome, bronze light fixtures, and Carrara marble stairways. The architect was James Oliver Hogg of Kansas City, MO. The architectural style is modified Greek Revival. The organ is a Cassavant .
Built 1908-1911, the church was dedicated January 28, 1912. The building was air-conditioned; power was supplied by its own power plant in an adjacent building and run by a full-time engineer.
Over the years the congregation has grown so additional buildings have been built to satisfy needs. The Christian Education Building was built in the mid 1950’s to house Sunday School classes and the Presbyterian Day School. In the 1990’s the all-purpose building, Ben E. Gillespie Building, was constructed.
First Presbyterian Church is a living church with an active congregation and weekly services.
We encourage you to visit and worship with us.
Connect
In addition to the celebration, we will unite together for a season of "Connecting With God and One Another." Beginning on Sunday, February the 5th through April 8th (Easter Sunday), we will gather for united worship at 10:30, with Christian Education at 9:15 am. Our Session believes that God is calling us to not only rededicate a building and an organ, but to re-dedicate our lives to connect with God, and share in fellowship, worship, ministry, mission with another. We are looking forward to what God will do in this season!
Mark Your Calendars!!
A Congregational Meeting has been called for Sunday, February 12, at 9:45 am in the sanctuary for the purpose of electing the Nominating committee, receiving of the annual report and to accept the terms of call for the pastor. We will need to vote on 4 at-large members of the Nominating Committee—these names are to come from the congregation. If you would like to nominate someone, please make sure they are an active member of the church, that they accept your nominating of them, and that they will be present on Sunday, February 12. For logistical purposes, please let Pat Ezell and Karen Colburn know of these names.
