ANnouncEments

Welcome to First Pres! You are welcome here! We are a community of faith that believes in the unconditional love of Jesus. We believe that Jesus accepts and wants a relationship with all of us NOW, as we are, not when we are "worthy" or "good enough" because none of us will ever be worthy or good enough. We would love for you to visit us in person or go to the "Services" page of this web site to view our online services.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday, or Passion/Palm Sunday, holds significant meaning as it marks the beginning of Holy Week. This day celebrates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem while foreshadowing his impending crucifixion, intertwining joy and sorrow.
Worship services often feature a palm branch processional, where congregants joyfully wave palms, symbolizing victory and welcome. This celebration is complemented by the reading of the Passion narrative, emphasizing that the journey to resurrection involves sacrifice.
The palms serve as a call for believers to recognize Jesus as King and Savior, inviting them to reflect on their acceptance of him in their lives. Palm Sunday also encourages introspection, connecting Jesus’ selfless love to contemporary struggles.
Ultimately, this day sets a profound tone for Holy Week, highlighting the inseparability of the cross and resurrection. It serves as a reminder for believers to embrace the fullness of the gospel, embodying the love and hope that Jesus represents. Join us Sunday, March 29 at 10:00 a.m. for Palm Sunday.

Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter. Maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum, meaning command, referring to Jesus’ commandment to His disciples to “Love one another as I have loved you.” Maundy Thursday is a time when remember how Jesus taught us what it means to be a servant as he washed the feet of his disciples and when he ate his Last Supper with his disciples before being led to the cross.
An Agape Meal, or “Love Feast” as it is also called, is an ancient tradition of table fellowship. Such family style meals seek to strengthen communal bonds and foster a spirit of harmony and goodwill. They usually include an opportunity to acknowledge our need for forgiveness. The meal is another way of living out Jesus’ mandatum (as in Maundy Thursday) or commandment that we love one another with the same self-emptying love, mercy and forgiveness with which he has loved and still loves us. Washing feet, therefore, can also be part of this meal when it is celebrated. The agape meal is typically an array of fresh and dried figs, apricots and dates, nuts, marinated olives, hummus, whole crusty breads, pita, olive oil, cheeses, grape leaves and other simple finger foods.
Join us Thursday, April 2 for an Agape Meal at 5:30 p.m. and a Maundy Thursday Service at 6:15 p.m. Please bring finger foods to share for the agape meal.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday, or the Resurrection of the Lord, is a cornerstone celebration here at First Presbyterian Church, marking Jesus Christ's victory over death, sin, and evil. This day signifies a transformation into a "new people" of God, celebrating the risen Christ's presence and the dawn of a new creation.
Easter is more than a miracle, Easter represents the defeat of forces opposing God's will, ushering in an era of peace and grace. Believers are called to live as "resurrection people," dead to sin and alive to God. Easter invites believers into a "new way of life," experiencing the resurrection's transformative power and living out their faith with hope and purpose. Come celebrate the resurrection of the Lord with us on Sunday, April 5 at 10:00 a.m.

Becoming Presbyterian, Becoming a Member

Presbyterians affirm that God comes to us with grace and love in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose for us so that we might belong to God and serve Christ in the world. God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, giving us the energy, intelligence, imagination, and love to be Christ’s faithful disciples in the world.
First Presbyterian Church is a place where people can meet Jesus, engage in a life-giving community, and everyone is welcome.  Our mission is to Worship God, Love People, and Grow Disciples.  Our hope is that you will find a family of faith where you will grow in your faith and use your gifts to the glory of God to worship Him, love people and grow disciples.
There are three ways to become a member of First Presbyterian Church: by Profession of Faith, by Reaffirmation of Faith, and by Letter of Transfer.  As you prayerfully consider your decision to become a member of First Presbyterian Church, we encourage you to speak to Rev. Bobby Daniel about your decision.  He is available to talk with you following the worship service, or you may contact him by phone (409-883-2097) or email bobby@firstpresorange.com during the week.
